Take inventory before requesting a code

Record existing nameservers and export the zone if possible. Include mail, authentication and verification records, not just the website address. Check the registrant email. Obtain the authorisation code from your current provider and share it only through the new registrar’s secure process.

Keep nameservers if DNS is staying put

If the existing DNS service remains available under your contract, keeping the nameservers can reduce moving parts. If DNS is moving, prepare the complete new zone first. Treat the registrar transfer and DNS switch as separate checkpoints.

Check expiry and transfer restrictions

Do not assume a .ch transfer adds a free registration year. Review the existing expiry and the transfer confirmation. A recent previous transfer or registry restrictions may affect eligibility. Ask for the specific reason if a request fails.

Your practical checklist

  • Back up the complete DNS zone.
  • Obtain the transfer code securely.
  • Test existing services.
  • Check the confirmed expiry date.

A useful question

Does my mailbox move too?

No. A registrar transfer does not copy mailbox messages. Prepare email migration separately.
