Prepare the destination and recovery option

Back up the current service and inventory accounts, aliases, forwarding and folders. Create the destination mailboxes and test access before changing MX. Check storage capacity and verify that exports can be read back.

Switch new delivery deliberately

Copy old messages using a supported migration method. Apply DNS changes, test externally and keep the old service running for cached or delayed delivery. Update every device. Cancel the former service only after validating folders, messages and new delivery.

Your practical checklist

  • Make a readable backup.
  • Check storage and addresses.
  • Test the new mailbox first.
  • Temporarily retain old access.

A useful question

Does a domain transfer handle this?

No. A registrar transfer does not migrate existing mailbox contents.
