Match the type to the destination
A points to IPv4 and AAAA to IPv6. CNAME aliases one hostname to another. MX identifies incoming mail servers. TXT carries settings such as verification and email authentication. The host field selects the part of the domain; many interfaces use an empty value for the apex.
Edit the active zone only
Check which nameservers are delegated. Only their authoritative zone controls the domain. Editing an old DNS provider does nothing after delegation moves. Back up records and change one service at a time to avoid breaking email while connecting a website.
Your practical checklist
- Check active nameservers.
- Back up the zone.
- Choose the correct record type.
- Test the affected service.
A useful question
Must I edit DNS at my registrar?
Only if the registrar also hosts the active DNS. Otherwise edit at the external DNS service.
